The Prince Rupert area is the traditional territory of the Tsimshian First Nations comprised of the Kitasoo, Lax Kw'alaams, Kitselas, Gitga'at, Kitsumkalum, Metlakatla, and Gitx'ala people, all of whom have inhabited the area for 10,000 years.

Transportation by ferry is offered by The Prince Rupert Ferry Terminal and Alaska Marine Highway.
